Talktogether

Couples communication practice — between sessions

TalkTogether encourages couples to practice the skills you are teaching them — at home, without you in the room to moderate. Couples get immediate constructive feedback from their conversations. Therapists receive summaries, data-backed insights, and progress reports of the conversations. You can quickly prepare before each session and dive right into progress and areas of opportunity — helping you make the most of your time in session.

I used to spend the first fifteen minutes of every session talking about each person’s version of what happened. Now I walk in already knowing — and we get to the work that actually changes things.

The pre-session report is the closest thing I have to a fly on the wall. I see how my couples actually communicate at home — so we can get right down to work.

Finally a tool that speaks the same clinical language. Pursue–withdraw entry points are right there in the timeline.

I was skeptical about AI in the room. After three weeks I was prescribing a TalkTogether recording for almost every couple.

My clients were giddy over hearing the results in our first session. Each spouse wasn’t aware they had been interrupting or invalidating each other — and this tool enabled them to self-reflect. TalkTogether allows me to give direct feedback and then side with the couple as a team to work together.

How it fits in your week

Under 7 minutes a week.

  • Send a conversation prompt. Couples record a 10–15 minute chat at home, on their own time.
  • Read the report before session. A skimmable summary lands in your inbox the morning of each session.

The problem

Therapy teaches the skills. Practice is what makes them stick.

You can give your couples the language, the framework, the homework. But like any skill — an instrument, a sport, a new habit — change doesn’t happen in 60 minutes a week. It happens in the reps between. And without visibility into those reps, you’re flying blind.

TalkTogether gives you visibility into the work between sessions — so you can drive faster, more durable progress.

What gets tracked

The vocabulary you already use.

Every label maps to a published framework. Nothing invented, nothing proprietary.

Four Destructive Patterns

Criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling — counted, timestamped, and paired with the antidote moments when they happen.

Repair attempts & bids

Every soft-start-up, repair attempt, and bid for connection — including whether the partner turned toward, away, or against.

Pursue–withdraw cycle

Negative interaction style, mapped turn by turn — so you can see exactly where each partner enters their part of the dance.

A.R.E. scoring

Accessibility, Responsiveness, Engagement — the attachment view, made visible across the conversation and over time.

Positive-to-negative ratio

The 5:1 positive-to-negative ratio — tracked per session and trended week over week so you can show couples concrete progress.

Tone, interruptions, who-spoke-when

Surface dynamics couples can’t see themselves: speaking-time balance, interruption frequency, escalation moments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Don’t both parties have to consent to be recorded?

Yes — both partners sign a HIPAA-compliant Informed Consent before any recording takes place. We provide the template; you countersign as the therapist. The consent explains how TalkTogether works, what data is collected, how it’s stored (encrypted, US servers only), and that either partner can withdraw consent at any time in writing. Templates are sent at signup.

Will couples be authentic if they know they’re being recorded?

It’s the most common concern — and the data is reassuring. Couples may be more careful in initial recordings, but tend to become more comfortable after 1–2 weeks when they hear feedback and see how this can help them. Prompts are designed to be light and conversational (debrief the week, talk about the weekend, plan something) — not “perform a fight.” Most therapists tell us couples are more authentic on TalkTogether than in session, because the in-session pressure to look good in front of the clinician isn’t there.

I don’t get paid for time outside session. How does that work?

TalkTogether is designed to save you time inside session, not add to your unpaid hours. The pre-session report takes ~5 minutes to read and replaces the first ~15 minutes you’d otherwise spend on “what happened” recap. Net: about 10 minutes back per session, per couple. Many therapists charge a small monthly review fee on top — we provide billing templates if you’d like to do that.

I work from an attachment-focused frame — does this fit my work?

Yes. TalkTogether tracks the A.R.E. lens (Accessibility, Responsiveness, Engagement), pursue–withdraw cycle entry and exit points, and attachment-relevant moments. The annotated transcript surfaces exactly the kind of in-the-moment data you’d otherwise have to wait for an enactment to access. Several seasoned couples therapists are on the founding team.

How do you protect the couple’s privacy?

End-to-end encrypted in transit and at rest. Signed BAAs with every vendor. You and the couple control retention — recordings can be deleted after each session if you prefer. Couples access only their own data; partners can’t access each other’s accounts. Read our full privacy & HIPAA brief on request.

Could one partner weaponize the report against the other?

TalkTogether works in service of the partnership. While one partner may think this tool will help them “catch” the other partner’s bad behavior, they quickly learn that both parties play a role in any pattern. We believe in the old adage “it takes two to tango.” TalkTogether deliberately avoids “who was right.” Metrics put both partners on the same team. And you control what’s shared.

Will couples actually do the recordings?

A 10–15 minute weekly recording, with a prompt, sent by their therapist, is one of the easiest pieces of homework couples consistently complete. Couples on TalkTogether average ~3.8 recordings per month. If a couple doesn’t engage, that’s clinical signal too — and you’ll see it surface in your dashboard.

How is this different from couples just journaling or self-reporting?

Self-report is filtered through memory, framing, and defense. The audio gives you what actually happened: tone, timing, who interrupted whom, what was said vs. what was heard. It also means you can revisit a moment exactly — bring the actual sentence back into session and work it.

What if I disagree with how the model labeled something?

Click to change it. Every label in the report is editable, and your edits inform how the model handles future turns for that couple. Nothing reaches the couple as a “recommendation” without your review. The model is a labeler; you’re the clinician.

What if it’s not the right fit for my practice?

25% off your first month, no contract, cancel anytime. If you’re not seeing value within 30 days, we’ll refund the month in full — no questions.

What’s in the Therapist Agreement?

A standard Master Services Agreement that covers the workflow, your data rights, our HIPAA commitments, and the standard SaaS protections (confidentiality, indemnification, dispute resolution). It’s a 12-month term that auto-renews; you can terminate for convenience with 30 days’ notice.

What’s your privacy & data policy?

Data lives only on encrypted servers in the United States. We never sell data to third parties. Couples can request information access, corrections, or deletion at any time via support@talktogetherapp.com — we honor deletion requests within 30 days.
